>> announcer: "news4 midday" starts now. the following breaking news out of frederick county, maryland two children are dead after a fire overnight. what we know about the cause and the victims. and a morning blanket of snow delays some commuters and schools this morning. we'll tell you when more snow could arrive. good morning, welcome to "news4 midday." i'm keith russell. >> and i'm barbara harrison. we have breaking news, a house fire has claimed the lives of two young children. the flames took over the home on highland avenue in myersville,

maryland. melissa mollet joins us. >> reporter: we just speak with investigators they tell us the two little girls who died were ages 3 and 6, sisters. chopper 4 flew over the house a little while ago. take a look. this fire broke out in the two-story home in highland avenue. when firefighters arrived the heavy flames and instability of the house hampered they are rescue efforts. that blaze so intense, it continued to burn for an hour and a half. dozens of firefighters responded. four others were if the house with those girls including a 33-year-old man, 33-year-old woman, 8-month-old and 7-year-old who had to be taken to the hospital for treatment. the victims' names have not been released and investigators woring to determine the cause. other news, it's been a rough morning in northern virginia. this was the dulles toll road.

traffic was backed up for nine miles after several accidents. that was all the result of a fast-moving storm that caught many drivers by surprise. news4's tony tull is in virginia county with more. >> reporter: yesterday, we had temps in the 70s, this morning, we're dealing with a little bit of snow which leaves a lot of residents in the region pretty confused. it's been a wild weather week. >> yeah, i'd say it's wacky weather. i'm from utah so i thought the weather there was wacky, but i moved out here, the 70s, straight to snow. that's crazy. >> reporter: from highs in the 70s a few days ago to lows in the 30s and snowing this morning. >> it's virginia, love it. that's the way virginia it. >> reporter: during the early morning hours here in northern virginia, snow accumulated on parked cars, grassy areas and a few other spots but on the roadways it simply melted away leaving wet conditions above the

freezing mark. the morning commute for drivers, well -- >> the roads haven't been too bad. most of the driven has either been driven off or melted off. >> it actually wasn't as bad as i thought it was going to be. i'm actually leaving out of the d.c. area. because of that it looked like going in was heavy. >> reporter: we're not expecting to see the 70-degree temps anytime soon. it seems the weatherman has been a popular person over the last few days. >> i rarely watch the weather but i found a need to this week. >> or -- >> i'm just kind of seeing what it's like when i walk outside. or just look out the window. >> reporter: and rolling with the punches may be the best way to deal with it. take a look right now, the roads are pretty good. traffic moving along just fine. the roads were salted. the brine was put down last night. so the community wasn't that bad. that's the latest from fairfax

county, i'm tony tull. back to you. >> the sun is out what can we expect, meteorologist tom kierein join us. >> we had ice, flooding tuesday, wednesday, snow yesterday. here are the snow reports in from this morning. not a lot only 0.2 here in washington. about a half inch much of north virginia, farther north and west in loudoun county, montgomery county about an hour. and central prince george's about an inch. farther west, frederick county about an inch. west of winchester about an ih there in the panhandle of west virginia and washington county where it's only in the low 20s right now. temperatures are cold. february certainly acting like a winter month as first day of february just at 30 degrees at reagan national. winds are gusting over 30 miles an hour. in fact, last hour, there was a

gust of 47 miles an hour at dulles airport. and we're going have these blustery winds into the afternoon. look at these windchills. this is what it feels like, only in in the low to mid-teens. if you're about to head out, layer up with your winter gear. put away the shorts and t-shirts. the cold pattern is back. how much longer is it going to last? details coming up. a major traffic alert for d.c. a portion of the southwest d.c. freeway is shut down. crews closed it between 8th street and pennsylvania avenue. the new closure will last 18 to 20 months. this is the secretary phase of the 11th street bridge project. it will have a big impact on drivers try together get on i-25, pennsylvania avenue or northbound 2 d.c. time to check the midday traffic. danella, things getting any

better? >> yes, keith, actually it is. in the sport a lot of slick spots with accidents. one of those accidents. darnstown road is closed at turkey foot road. the crash there hit a poll, downed wires. what happened is, southbound lanes are blocked but you're getting by using northbound lanes. good news, 70 looks better. a lot of delays from frederick to the beltway. no issues to report north or southbound. a judge has denied a mistrial case in the case of a former culpepper police officer. the judge requested the misfire after a dictionary and a thesaurus were found in the jury room after the verdict was handed down tuesday. they claim the jury members had to look up the definition of malice suggests they may have been confused about their instructions. daniel harmon wright said he

shot patricia cook last year when his arm got caught in her suv window and she tried to drive away. negotiators are still talking by a man holding a 5-year-old in a bunker for three days. 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes stormed the school on tuesday. he shot the bus driver and ended up taking the boy named ethan into a bunker. the boy has his medicine plus crayons and a tv to keep him calm. tributes to former new york city ed koch are pouring into our newsroom. koch passed away this morning of congest tour failure. he served as mayor from 1978 to 1989. he'll be remembered for his feisty style. supporters say he helped lift new york city out of its financial crisis in the late '80s. koch will be laid to rest on

monday. he was 88 years old. and d.c. councilmember tommy wells is thinking of running for mayer. we understand he will launch an exploratory committee. that doesn't mean he'll definitely run for mayer. but he does hope to make a decision this spring. he said current mayer vincent gray didn't reannounce if he'll run for re-election. >> the economy added 150,000 new jobs last month according to the department of labor. it also released data that suggested hiring was stronger in the past two years than previously thought. employers added an average of 180,000 jobs per month in 2011 and 2012. that's up from previous estimates of 150,000 jobs a month. the unemployment rate did jump from 7.8% to 7.9%. meantime, the auto industry showing off its latest innovations in our region right now. the 2013 washington auto show

interested in the gizmo, the technology in the car. a lot of it deals with safety. >> driving down the street, if you get too close to somebody, or somebody's getting too close to you, the car alerts, not just you, but it will also alert the car and slow you down or move you over or whatever, if you're getting too close to somebody or if you're falling asleep. it will actually light up your seat, wake you up. >> reporter: how does it know? >> it snows because it can sense that you're drifting in lanes or something like that. you would not be going to sleep, maybe you're intoxicated. >> reporter: and if you come to the show, all kinds of interesting interactive exhibits. now this is the cadillac cue. it's a simulator of sorts here. you can sit in it. you're going to have to sit in the passenger seat. you can sit and learn about the cue system inside the cadillac

we're following a developing story out of turkey. a suspected suicide bomber has blown himself up outside the u.s. embassy in ankara. we just got this video of the scene into our newsroom. we're still gathering information, but we can tell you that the bomber and an embassy guard were killed. turkey's government is blaming the attack on a leftist group in that country. and rescuers are using dogs, trucks and a crane to look for survivors in that deadly explosion in mexico city. this is surveillance video showing the explosion near the mexican build. the pemex building is circled

where the arrow points to the explosion in one of the buildings next door. it was a very quick flash in the distance. at least 32 people died and 100 others injured. investigators are trying to determine whether an accident on a terrorist attack. back here at the district. it will be an emotional day at the state department. this is hillary clinton's last day as secretary of state. asked what's next for her, clinton is rumored as making another run for president in 2016. she told andrea, she's not sure what's in her future. >> i have no opinion about this, i'm still secretary of state. i can't really engage in politics. for the foreseeable future i don't think i'll be at all political. >> john kerry will succeed

about lack of snow and when are we going to get some. and all the different types of weather. it was a great there at the burke school. i want to thank amy for the invitation to visit the students there. and as we look at a live picture, look at the potomac river, it looks like chocolate milk. it's turned muddy. runoff from heavy rains from yesterday, into thursday morning. now, it's running off into the river and all what runoff bringing in a lot of mud. it's a big muddy -- looks like the mississippi not the potomac. winds out of the north-northwest, reagan national, gusting at 30 miles an hour. look at the windchill, 17 with the temperature at 30 degrees. montgomery county, farther north and west. arlington, fairfax and loudoun county, and prince william.

all over to fredericksburg, a little above freezing there. the winds are gusting out of the north and west. these are the latest wind gusts. over 30 miles an hour into most of the region. this what it feels like in the mid to low teens. you have to haul your winter gear out after summer gear on tuesday and wednesday into the 70s. we had that quick shot of snow. didn't last long. did unload more snow, several inches into northern delaware. it's beginning to taper off there. we've got breaks in the clouds. as we go forward, the rest of the day could have quite a bit of sunshine. clear, cold. saturday afternoon, clouds increasing, coming in from another system. does look like more snow sweeping into the mountains late saturday night. sunday morning, we may have passing snow showers coming through again with another dusting. does not look like a major event

and then gone by sunday afternoon. hour by hour, through the afternoon, you need your warmest winter gear, climbing back into the low to mid-30s by midafternoon. the winds whipping in bringing in colder air. in fact by midnight, it's going to be down to 20 degrees. by dawn tomorrow, down into the teens on saturday morning. saturday afternoon, up around freezing. a lot of clouds around. again, that chance of maybe another dusting of white snow late saturday night into sunday midday. still cold, highs on monday, too, only the 30s but a little bit warmer but still below the average highs. the average high is 44. it's going to stay colder than average the next seven days. >> it sure is cold out there now. thank you, tom. >> danella, what can you tell us? >> earlier because of the flurries, multiple accidents traveling east and westbound, delays up to about nine miles. looking from dulles passing the

right now, that fast-moving snowstorm that blew through our region this morning is already long gone. the snow piled up on parked cars and grassy areas across the region. it also caused several minor accidents on dulles toll road. economists say january's jobs report is mostly good news. the labor department said 150,000 new jobs were created last month. the labor department also increased the number of jobs the economy's added over the past two years. the unemployment rate did tick upward from 7.8 to 7.9%. d.c.'s top financial manager is resigning gandy will resign

in june. it comes just as the district announced the $400 million surplus that happened this week. we'll have more on this story coming up on news 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00 and on nbcwashington.com. wait till you hear this. a terrifying ordeal on a plane. this plane had to land unexpected when, get this, the pilot passed out. the first officer was able to divert the plane to portland and land it safely. we're still working on what caused the pilot to pass out in the first place. hollywood actor bradley cooper is in town but not to promote his own movie, rather, to bring awareness to mental health illnesses. >> i can ask everyone to be open to not walking away from somebody or turning away from somebody who you may feel uncomfortable around. because i got to experience what those who suffer from mental

illness experience by playing this character. >> cooper spoke at a press conference downtown about an hour ago. the oscar-nominated actor plays in "silver linings playbook." d.c. police need your help identifying a man who kidnapped and groped a teenager. the attack happened in the 5100 block northeast. a 60-year-old man was walking when a man got out of his suv and forced her to get inside. he drove a few blocks away, groped her and let her go. if you know anything contact d.c. police. police are looking to see if two attacks were links. a 30-year-old woman was walking on dim witty street when someone approached her from behind, grabbed her and groped her. a 25-year-old woman said she was

walking when someone groped her. she screamed and the man ran off. both descriptions of the attacker matched the sketch of the attacker in 15 different assaults. funeral arrangements are now set. former maryland delegate christine jones died after rescuers pulled her from her burning home last week. jones was 83 years old. the funeral service will be held in bethlehem baptist church on martin luther king avenue in southeast d.c. the viewing is next thursday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. the service is next friday at 11:00 a.m. an internal investigation by the prince george's fire department continues this morning after a fire truck was mangled on a serious crash on the beltway wednesday. a west lanham hills fire engine was rear ended by a tractor trailer as it made a u-turn on the beltway.

a u-turn is legal, but investigators are looking to see if the turn broke the guidelines on u-turns. one firefighter had to have his arm surgically reattach. let's check in with tom kierein outside on the weather 4 weather deck. >> this wind is just brutal. hopefully, you can still hear me. it's gusting at 35, 40 miles an hour. it's just blowing in here really hard. and the cold temperatures have returned. there's the sky over washington. we've got these cloud s racing through at the cloud level. we're getting some of those winds and over the last several hours we've had the clouds racing in in the wake of the system that came on through this morning and gauve us that light snow. right now in the region in the 20s to just below 30 degrees. these are the latest wind gusts.

over 30 miles an hour. 30 to 40 miles an hour into the afternoon. there are the windchills and i can certainly feel it. the windchills are down into the teens right now. this cold pattern is going to be with us here for the next seven days with temperatures below the average high of 44. that will be way below average today, tomorrow and into sunday. maybe a little more light snow. a dusting like we got last night. maybe saturday night into sunday midday. and then monday, still cold, some sun back, maybe some flurries late tuesday and early wednesday. but still colder than average. that is the way it looks. admit it, keith, you like to see the weatherman suffer. >> tom, i want to commend you after this week, you deserve bonus and hazard pay. >> i'll take it. >> you earned it. job well done. moving along, metro is offering an apology for wednesday night's massive

meltdown. instead of you can cutting power to a track, metro said an employee shut down power to two full trains. metro's general manager is apologizing and admits the response was not good enough. he says there's an ongoing investigation in what led to the mess. and it could be a rough trip on metro this weekend with six stations closed. at 10:00 tonight, buss will begin replacing trains on federal center southwest and chehave everybodily. and deenwood stations will be closed. there's single tracking on the red and orange lines and green and yellow lines sunday night only. let's check on the midday traffic. danella, how's it looking out there now? >> it looks good. luckily, metro is not reporting delays. hurry, get on.

let's head to darnestown road. they're looking to clear that. now just of the southbound lanes are blocked. you can get around it, just use caution. we'll start in montgomery county nice and clear. and same thing in prince george's county. crossing the bridge. no issues to report. today, lawmakers could vote to toughen the state's texting while driving laws. one proposed fine would hike a fine up to $250 and police could pull you over for texting while driving as a primary offense. another texting behind the wheel a reckless driving offense which could mean jail time. and it could soon be illegal to smoke with kids in the car in the state of virginia. the state senate passed a bill that would ban lighting up with

a passenger under the age of 15. drivers would be ticketed the same way they would for a traffic violation. the bill now goes to the house of delegates. well, he makes physics underable to the masses and now he's being honored by the president. university of maryland professor jim gates will be awarded the national medal of science in a ceremony at the white house today. gates specializes in string theory. gates was also named a regents professor making him the sixth person to receive that honor since established. millions of bottles of cough syrup are being recalled because of a possible poisoning risk to children. the caps on triaminic and theraflu products can fail allowing kids to open them. there have been several incidents of children swallowing large amounts of the medicine. one required medical attention.

>> announcer: you're watching "news4 midday." marylanders could soon get relief in they fall in sick. maryland lawmakers are considering a bill that would guarantee workers seven paid sick days a year. the baltimore sun would earn employees one hour of six leave. the dow climbed above 14,000 today for the first time since the great depression. looks like those good job numbers made a difference. cnbc's courtney reagan joins us with that and the rest of the today's business headlines.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, barbara. the dow is currently sitting at 13,986. but it did cross before pulling back. this say day after it closes out the strongest opening in 19 years. as you believe the adage, as goes january, show goes the rest of the year. could be a strong one for invest investors. the first jobs report did show 150,000 jobbed were added in january. the unemployment rate ticked up to 7.9%. thanks to revisions the economy added more jobs than previously estimated a large part of those jobs coming in the final months of the 82er. consumer sentiment rose despite most americans taking home lower paychecks due to tax increases as a result of those payroll tax expirations. though the highest price at the pump ever for february 1st,

>> announcer: you're watching "news4 midday." making the playoffs certainly has its perks. cheap ticket prices won't be one of them for redskins fans. the redskins say they will raise their ticket prices for the first time in seven years. the price for those seats will increase no thorn 10%, although the team is not giving any specific details it will also cost you more to park at fedex field. the redskins say their ticket prices remain among the cheapest in the nfc east. sunday's game between the san francisco 49ers and baltimore ravens will be the first time in the 47 years of the super bowl that two brothers will go head to head. >> and for the first time in super bowl history, the opposing head coaches had a pregame joint press conference. dan hellie is in new orleans where history is being made.
